Explain the full background story of Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty Season six has now arrived, and the premiere episode “Solaricks” does nothing short of (finally) filling in some key holes for the true origin and backstory of the series and its main characters. Rick and Morty creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have built core legends for the show since season one – but always with the grin of not letting these same legends launch the show. However, the full picture has now been put in place, and it certainly deepens the story of the character who is the heart of the show.

The biggest development in the premiere of Rick and Morty Season 6 is the official introduction of Rick Prime (or “Weird Rick”) – Rickest of Ricks. Rick Prime discover multidimensional travel and the portal gun and try to recruit Rick C-137 (the show’s main protagonist Rick) to explore the multiverse with him. However, Rick C-137 was an entirely different type of Rick (and that’s the key) who valued his family (his wife Diane and daughter Beth) more than he valued science or God-like power to master the multiverse. It’s been repeatedly said that Rick Prime then tried to kill Rick C-137 despite a bomb, but killed Diane and Beth instead, before fleeing into the multiverse and vowing to go it alone.

Rick Prime was basically doing whatever he wanted without a clear agenda (for now); He was pulled back into the dimension of Cronenberg’s home by resetting the accidental gateway to Rick C-137 in the season six premiere. With Portal Guns off the table at the moment (see: Evil Morty), it looks like Rick Prime is stranded (for now). If Rick Prime finds out why he’s pulled into his house, the C-137 and his family could have big targets on their backs…

After Rick C-137 kills his family, he manages to discover Multi-Dimensional Travel and the Portal Gun for himself and blast across the multiverse to hunt down and kill Weird Rick, killing (hundreds of thousands?) of his variants along the way. The C-137 campaign made him an enemy of the Rex Council, the Galactic Federation, and many others; In the end, Rick settled those wars and built Rex’s castle and its own gene-making systems for genetic manipulation – as well as the finite central curve that ensures Rex are the smartest in their confined section of infinity.

Exhausting his bloody quest, Rick C-137 settles into the “world of Cronenberg” which is actually just Rick Prime’s home away. He stayed with Rick Prime Morty, Beth, Somer, and Jerry to wait for Rick Prime to come home; Instead, Rick Prime never returned (because of apparent social nihilism) and Rick C-137 finds his old (how debilitating) family love renewed, staying with Beth and her family, and Rick Prime Morty, which is how the series begins.

Now Rick C-137 knows where to finally find Rick Prime, but getting there again will be difficult…

Who is Morty?

The main Morty in the series is Morty “Kronenberg Universe” and is the grandson of Rick Prime. The reality house was abandoned by Rick Prime, and thus Morty was associated with Rick’s C-137, who replaced his grandfather. Mortys have been manipulated into existence and cloned by Rex – but “Morty Prime” has often been hinted at as unique or special – such as when he led the rebellion against the crook “Evil Rick” led by Evil Morty. Thanks to Morty Prime who tried to make a love potion in Season 1, he turned his entire world into the Cronenbergs and was forced to teleport with Rick C-137 to a new reality – now eliminated in the Season 6 premiere. Morty Prime is now in a reality where Parmesan cheese is pronounced: “par-me-sian”.

Who is evil Morty?

Long believed to be the series’ main antagonist, “Evil Morty” is a version of Morty that has both grown self-conscious and tired of Rex’s cycle of using Mortys as tools in horrific ways. This type of Morty has grown clever and powerful enough to enslave Rick to be a pawn (Evil Rick), and destabilize the castle community before he plans to elect him as its chief. As the boss of the castle, Evil Morty is finally able to corner Rick C-137 and finish the work started by the Evil Rick doll: scanning the brain of the C-137 in search of a solution to overcome the finite central curve.

Evil Morty destroys the castle and escapes from the curve with the new Golden Portal Pistol – if he ever comes back, how and what he will do, remains to be seen…

Rick and Morty Season 6 airs Sundays on Adult Swim.
